No more “Road Glides”!?  What’s up with that?

I have many friends from the west coast to the east coast that swear up and down their RG is the best ride on two wheels. We’re not talking about your normal every day proud owner of their ride, but with most RG owners, we’re talking about a cultish following that exhorts the amazing benefits and ingenuous engineering that they claim makes it the most sought after and cherished cruising machine ever. Period. No if, buts or maybes.  Discussion over.  I can’t get a word in edgewise.

When I purchased my 2012 Street Glide last spring, my buddies who owned RG’s looked at me like I’d lost my mind. The question always came up and sounded something like this, “Why did you buy a SG and not a RG?”  I endured a lot more ribbing and criticism than I’d ever expected, but I must admit the RG is an amazing machine. My hat goes off to the boys at HD who created it. Personally, I just liked the look of the SG and the feel of the instrument panel close up… and just couldn’t get used to the European style of the RG fairing. One little factor was the idea of night riding and the headlights not following the handlebar direction. Not a big deal, but just one thing I preferred on the SG. I asked the local HD dealer why the RG’s were being discontinued and the response was that they are really popular in Western Canada, but not really anywhere else in North America. They sell, but not like out west here.

Hmmm. My guess is that we see a 2015 or 2016 totally updated and remodelled RG that rocks the world and drives sales through the roof. I found this to present an interesting paradox …  a popular motorcycle being discontinued and individuals / personalities who take the world by storm, for a time, before they disappear from sight.  Rock stars, political figures, actors and actresses, sport heroes, and the myriad of other people that our world lifts up and puts on pedestals, only to see them fade away in time.
